Cool Weather Vegetable Gardening

Master Gardener Elizabeth York shares her experience cultivating cool weather vegetables at the Albert L. Scott Library Saturday, September 7th.

Elizabeth York is the current President and past Vice President of the Shelby County Master Gardener’s Association. She grew up in Alabama and lives in Helena. She and her husband are retired and enjoy traveling and gardening, which she has been doing since the 1970s. She loves to propagate plants and start flowers from seeds. She is a big Dahlia lover and is a member of the American Dahlia Society and the local Birmingham Dahlia chapter.  She also belongs to a small gardening group, The Dirt Diggers, who get together for plant fellowship and lunch.  She spends time with her grandchildren and volunteers at Hunter Street Baptist Church.

York says that in Alabama we can select vegetables that will grow in different seasons year round. She discusses the difference in transplants vs. seeds and the correct soil temperature for seed germination. “Cool weather gardening is completely different than summer vegetable gardening,” York offers.  “The vegetables are different, (carrots, lettuces, broccoli, kale, Brussels, spinach etc.), the temperatures are milder, and there are less pests.” York will discuss different containers to use for growing, fertilizers to use, and protection using row coverings, straw bales, and windows.
